First SAFE-FLY Network Short Course (NSC) was organised at Eurostars Hotel (Madrid, Spain) by Aernnova Engineering Division from 24-25 January 2018.
A number of international speakers from both the aerospace industry and the academia were invited to perform keynote talks and technical presentations. The event was a unique opportunity to learn and discuss about the up to date SHM technologies being currently adopted by the aerospace industry, and the future developments that both industry and academia are currently involved in.
In particular, ultrasonic-based SHM emerged as the most promising and suitable technique for real-time on-board structural integrity assessment. In addition, the connection of ultrasonic-based SHM with prognostics and health management methodologies was highlighted as a key and desirable future development to allow condition-based instead of time-based maintenance, therefore reducing unnecessary maintenance costs while increasing safety.
